There is ongoing work in the area, in
http://open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG21/docs/papers/2016/p0201r1.pdf
which originally was closer to a cloning pointer than a polymorphic
value. The paper author has told me that
he thinks it's a good idea to propose both a cloning pointer and a
polymorphic value, and that he plans to
do just that in the future.
