I think we're just looking at it from different angles.

C and C++ require that memory be byte addressable, per the definitions I 
quoted.

On architectures that can't do that, like you and Bo said, pointer addresses 
in C and C++ may need to be wider than the actual hardware pointer. That meets 
the requirement from the language.

But from all intents and purposes, the consequence is that all architectures 
are byte-addressable.
