The problem is that we don't have a time machine, so we can't go back and fix 
code that existed before the feature.

Even I trusted a tool to do a global replacement in my own source code, which 
I can inspect and confirm correctness for, and everyone else did the same, 
there are plenty of old releases of all frameworks still in use and people 
with legitimate reasons not to upgrade. I wouldn't run such tools it for third 
party codebases and don't expect most people would either. It would be a 
maintenance nightmare.
