My suggestion would be not to refer to a global get_pointer() or to_pointer(), but add a member to std::iterator_traits<>. For the specialization for C-style pointers, this is essentially a no-op. For the generic template, which defers to members of the iterator class itself, it seems natural to include the to_pointer() as a static member of the iterator class and let std::iterator_traits<> redirect there. I don't think there's a third choice for an iterator beyond C-style pointer and a class.
