Let me add a few more features that I had not mentioned:

1. You get persistence "free" with this library. Just close the library
when done (or let the destructor do it), and reopen it when you want the
data again. The startup and shutdown times are very short, so this doesn't
introduce much delay.
2. You can open the file read-only from any number of programs/threads.
This is very useful for caching data from a remote database that is needed
in several programs/threads simultaneously.
